Hilary Lectures, 2008

Relevant Christian Faith in a
Post-Christian Society

On Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, St. Andrew’s Academy was pleased to have Ken Myers from Mars Hill Audio present our 2008 Hilary Lectures. This lecture series has become a tradition at St. Andrew’s and is named for Hilary term, the middle academic term of the school year which begins near the feast of St. Hilary of Poitiers (Jan. 13).

Mr. Myers’ address focused on the difficulty of living a faithful Christian life in a post-Christian culture. He noted that we accept most of the elements of the American consumer culture without thinking through the implications, the baggage, that come with these elements. For example, consumer convenience--having anything we want at any time--carries with it a message of self-gratification and trains us to be impatient and un-industrious. How should a Christian combat such messages? How do we think through the cultural norms we are faced with in light of the patterns establish by God in creation? Is there anything from food to technology for which we can escape the responsibility to ponder these implications?
