Fencing
The fencing program at St. Andrew’s Academy began in 2007 under the direction of Mr. Robert Montavon who continues to coach the students today. The student fencers (and some faculty) continue to work hard at learning this ancient art and in applying the principles of honor, combat and competition with “discipline, courage and courtesy.”
Senior JoAnna Waterman has excelled this year and taken two silver medals and one bronze in tournaments this year, in both foil and épée (and is, in fact, writing her senior thesis on dueling). Fencing has a long history and is a lifetime sport that pushes students to use the mind and the body well. Mr. Montavon is fond of saying that fencing is like playing chess with a sword.
